Music featured on the Weekend Explorer series is very carefully selected. We seek out local artists in our featured destination that play Folk and/or World Beat music that relates to that destination. Sometimes the music is traditional to that destination and other times its imported but still played by local musicians. I have come to believe after years of producing this series that musicians are influenced by their surroundings. For example, although imported the same ancient Celtic piece sounds very different when played by Legendary Big Gerry from the Eastern Sierras than it does by Ellis & Franklin from Southern Utah. These two destinations are only a few hundred miles apart yet in Legendary Big Gerrys music you can literally here the chirping of birds and the gurgling of a high sierra mountain stream, while in Ellis & Franklins work you can almost here the turning of the wagon wheels that brought the Mormon settlers to Utah. I am quite sure that this very same piece of music would sound quite different again, if played by someone from the Celtic homeland in the British Isles.
Over the next few months, we plan to share much more of the music from our series. So, we hope you will return to this page. In the meantime, learn all about the music from our first two seasons by visiting our web area on PBS.org at www.pbs.org/weeekendexplorer.
