Learn more about the Tushar Mountains.
Elk Meadows in nestled in the Tushar Mountains of Southern Utah. The following is a description by my geologist friend, Mark Milligan at the Utah Geological Survey.
The Tushars are the remnants of a long succession of volcanoes that erupted from 30 to 4 or 5 million years ago. They are composed of a whole slew of igneous rock types including obsidian, basalt and andesite flows, breccias, tuffs, ash flows, and granitic intrusions. Total thickness of these deposits exceeds 10,000 feet. Long periods of erosion separated some of the eruption events. Many of these volcanic rocks are rich in mineral deposits, including ores of gold, silver, mercury, copper, lead, zinc, uranium, manganese, iron, aluminum, and potassium.
