Taiwan

Marble is too hard to erode by natural run off (True or False)?

False! One of Taiwan's most spectacular attractions is the marble Taroako Gorge.

Taroako Gorge, Taiwan
Around 4 million years ago, marble deposits deep in the earth were pushed to the surface when the Eurasian Tectonic plate collided with the Philippine Tectonic plate. This collision also caused the formation of Taiwan's Central Mountain Range.

Seashells being deposited and compacted on the ocean floor over millenniums form limestone. Marble is formed when limestone is put under pressure and heat for a few million years. Marble is very hard, but the heavy annual rains in Taiwan have allowed the Liwu River to slice right through the marble. It's because marble is so hard that these cliff sides are so steep and spectacularly beautiful.
