The origins of the name 'Maine' are not actually known, but this is a leading theory. In 1639, King Charles I named the area in honor of his queen who was also the daughter of the King of France and she held a right in the Province of Maine in France. New England fisherman at the time may very well have thought that the name was the adoption of their word Maine used to distinguish a coast from neighboring islands.
