Moose watching, Maine Highlands
The Maine Highlands has the largest concentration of Moose anywhere in the contiguous United States.

Moose can live to be 25 years old and weigh 1500 lbs (700kg)
The Moose is the largest of the deer family.

The color of a Moose depends on the season and its age. They can range from brown to black, while calves are a light rusty color.

The front legs of a moose are longer than the back!

Males are much larger than females. Females are only about 70% the size
of a male.

Only males have antlers. These massive antlers can be over 5 feet (1.6 meters) across and can weigh up to 45 lbs (20 kg). Males only have a fully developed set of antlers for a very short period each year. Antlers are dropped in November/December and a new larger pair is grown in the spring. Antlers are formed by living tissue that supplies blood to soft smooth skin called velvet. This tissue ultimately solidifies into mineralized dead matter. This whole process is completed just in time for the fall mating season or rut.
