Learn why Bangor was once America's busiest seaport.

The gateway to the Maine Highlands is the small town of Bangor. In the age of sail, Bangor was as far inland as ships could go upstream from the ocean. This made it an important trading hub for the timber coming out of central Maine, critical for an expanding America needing wood for fuel and shelter. By the turn of the 19th Century, this area was the busiest seaport on the East Coast. It should come as no surprise that Bangor claims to be the birthplace of Paul Bunyan. |
