Which state was named after the Ute Indians?

Utah! Maybe that was a little too easy of a question. The Ute Indians were originally called Utahs or Yutas and variations of these names. They were later nicknamed the “Blue Sky People”.

Although initially warlike, by 1776 the Utes were known for their friendliness and they were sought out by two Spanish friars to show them a trail to Spain’s holdings in California from their base in Santa Fe.

The Utes took the friars on a longer trail then necessary, since historians believe they liked the friars so much they didn’t want to part ways.

The Utes were quick to welcome the white man to their land. They not only showed them the fastest routes through the mountains, sometimes they even made high stone monuments so the whites wouldn’t get lost. Almost every highway in Colorado today follows one of these original Ute trails.
